Moonspell – Night Eternal (2008)

This band needs no introduction. After their album Under Satanae containing rerecordings of earlier material and the best of record The Great Silver Eye Moonspell has finally come up with some new material. The new record Night Eternal shows that the Portuguese musicians have not lost their ability to surprise as the album combines all of their previous traits into one strong masterpiece. Fans of the darker and heavier Moonspell records will be happy to see that their favorite band is still on the right track, while the fans of the Gothrock orientated albums will get theirs as well. “Scorpion Flower” – the first single of Night Eternal features guest vocals by prominent singer Anneke van Giersbergen, which promotes the album even further in my opinion. This is by far one of their best albums ever, as it combines everything that made Moonspell worth listening to in the first place. A dark gothic atmosphere is enriched with black metal elements and dream like interludes. Fernando Ribeiro’s vocals are spot on and also the rest of the musical performance is amazing. If you want to dive into a dark world of demonic proportions there is no better album than Night Eternal.
The Limited Edition is once again worthwhile as it contains not only a few bonus tracks (“Age of Mothers” should not be missed out on) but also a DVD containing material from their show at the Wacken Open Air in 2007.
